Brandy, Addy, and Grace,
“I am not this hair. I am not this skin. I am the soul that lives within.” – Rumi
I heard this quote from a cancer survivor, and the truth it holds made me consider that which I see and hear in this life, because what I perceive leads to the stories I tell myself about those around me (and the person in the mirror), and how those stories make me feel drives the behavior that may or may not reflect God’s Love to those He has brought into my life.
The soul is what both the Bible and psychologists call the psyche, which is the very essence of who we are. The soul, also called the heart or the inner person, guides our thoughts and perceptions, which drives our emotions and behavior. It’s the soul that God Saves. It’s the soul that God Loves so much that He sent His only Son to die so that those who Believe in Him can be Saved in Eternity (John 3:16-18).
My Girls, far too often we make judgments about ourselves and others based on the superficial things that what we perceive – not the soul that lies within; therefore, I Hope and Pray that you will strive to see beyond the temporary, like skin and hair, but instead try to see who someone really is (who you really are), seeing them (yourself) through the eyes of Jesus – through the eyes of Love. I encourage you to study the heart and look for their (your) Love of God and others – examine the fruit of their lives (your life), not the leaves. And when you are judged by others (or you judge yourself), remember that they are probably not perceiving the real you, because it’s unlikely that they are truly seeing you the way your God sees you.
Challenge Question: How can you better perceive the souls around you TODAY?
God’s Word: Galatians 5:22-26, 1st Corinthians 2:16, and 2nd Corinthians 4:16-18
